Prima [essay 5-17-11]

In the article ''Going for the look but risking discrimination'' by Steven Greenhouse he uses the phrase ''Skirting the edges of anti-discrimination'' which describes the behavior of employers who are hiring based on appearance and not their work experience or work habits. After reading this article and understanding that phrase, I've come to believe that companies have every right to hire whomever may portray the image they want. Companies will do whatever they can to get ahead and make the company more successful which leads them to being very selective about who they hire to work in there store. The companies understand that all of their employees are representing a certain image, so looks play a big part in selecting who they choose to hire.
For example, stores like Abercrombie and Fitch are extremely selective about who they hire. They only hire blue eyed, blond hair, fit young people to work at their store. As some may see it as being discriminatory, the company sees it as hiring people who fit the image of their store.
Marshal Cohen states that hiring based on how well the employee can portray the company image is critical. I agree when he states that the employees are like walking billboards, in other words saying that who they hire will be advertising their products. The way that employees dress, look and act can make attract customers into the store therefore, making the company more successful.
Although I've never experienced not being hired because of my looks, after all the class discussions we had about this, I saw how some of my classmates reacted to not being hired simply because they weren't female and wanting to sell women's clothing. It may have seemed harsh but reality is that women are more comfortable approaching another woman for advice on whats ''in'' and what may look better.
My conclusion, then, is that companies have every right to hire whomever they want especially when they are trying to project an image. They're only doing whats right for their company.

Prima & Michael[ 5-11-11]

In the article ''Going for the look, but Risking Discrimination'' by Steven Greenhouse he uses the phrase, ''Skirting the edges of anti-discrimination laws'' which means that businesses are not breaking the law by hiring based on looks that projects the company image, but are on the borderline of doing so.This is what we call a loophole. For example, stores like Abercrombie & Fitch and Hollister skirt this law by only choosing to hire blue eyed, blond, and fit people to work in their stores. On one hand this can be very beneficial for the company but on the other hand this can be considered discriminatory. Greenhouse states that a former manager of Abercrombie & Fitch was told that it was policy only to hire people who project the company image. So in conclusion, many companies ''Skirt the edges of anti-discrimination'' but, there is still a debate whether  this is discrimination or not.

Prima & Michael [5-5-11] OUR BIRTHDAY:D

In today's lesson we learned that addressing the prompt in your first paragraph can be a good writing strategy. We also learned that awkward sentences can confuse your reader.

In the article ''Going for the look, but Risking Discrimination'' by Steven Greenhouse he uses the phrase,''Skirting the edges of anti-discrimination laws'' which my partner and I  believe means that businesses are not breaking the law by hiring based on looks that projects the company image . This is what we call a loop hole. But even though they are not completely breaking the law they are very close. They hiring based on looks which means they could discriminate against older that don't project the company "Image." So they are discriminating to a point but this is still a very grey area.

When will ever use this? This is a question I ask myself all the time while in class. I look at most of the things I learn in my Statistics class and I feel like I'll never use it.

Some of the teachers just seem to be dumb as well. For instance, my economics teacher was giving us notes to write and I believe that he put our word to know on the board, then wrote the definition, and then was redundant and put a sentence telling us the word again. I asked him, "Was that last sentence really necessary?" He told me yes it was, but I think he knew it was stupid of him to have done that.

Is school important? Will we ever need what we learned? The answer is yes of corse it will all come in handy one day.

We learned that opening up your paragraph with an anecdote can give your reader an idea of what your talking about.

Alliteration

We learned that using a series of words with the same sound can make your writing sound poetic.

We think that companies should be able to hire people who project the company image because if you were running an eco friendly company you wouldn't hire someone who drives a Hummer. An employee who projects the company image can make your company more successful and seem more professional.

Prima & Michael [vocabulary paragraph] 4-13-11

The empirical evidence all pointed to Mr. Hamilton as the one that killed Joey. Christian was an advocate for this as he saw the crime. Mr. Hamilton claimed that Christian must have seen a mirage because he had nothing to do with Joey's untimely end. Mr. Hamilton came up with a magic bullet claiming, that he was in Vegas at the time of the incident. In one of the police reports a witness claimed to see a man with black hair, and this did not match Mr. Hamilton's appearance. Mr. Hamilton in laud-praise said, "I didn't kill Joey!" The evidence began to ascent against him though. Mr. Hamilton tried to impede the trial by faking a heart attack. This was able to constrain the trial for another day.

In today's lesson we learned about a very important template & that template was,In Bilger's essay,'' The Last Meow'' he states that American's spending on their pets has gotten out of control.I Agree..''

Tuesday, April 5, 2011

Prima & Michael [4-5-11]

In today's lesson we learned some templates. One that we learned was,'' On the one hand and on the other hand''. We leaned that if you starts a sentence with on the one hand somewhere in that paragraph you have to mention on the other hand. Another template that we learned was,'' I understand but....". We learned that it's always good to state your opinion but state that you understand the opposing side.

Prima & Michael [3-23-11]

In today's lesson we learned that you should not stray from the prompt & that you should have a consistent  flow between your opinion & the author. We learned how this prompt can be  used repeatedly in different essays we write in college. The last thing we learned was that in writing it's better to  address the template rather than be creative with it.

In today's lesson we reviewed an essay. This essay doesn't really compare to mine at all. Although I had some of the same arguments, they were worded out completely different. Throughout my entire essay I tried to stay on one point so I wouldn't confuse the reader but now reading this essay I realize that having many different arguments makes the essay flow better. I really liked this essay kept a consistent flow & kept me interested. The fact that the essay didn't confuse me made it all the more enjoyable to read.

What we learned today's lesson is that beginning an essay with a personal experience is a very good strategy. We also learned about how considering the opposing viewpoint can help your reader relate and understand your opinion throughout your essay. One of the last strategies that we learned about today is if you refer back to the reading and quote the author it can help the reader understand your view.

Primavera Lopez[ 3-9-11]

On the one hand, while some people agree with Bilger's idea that spending billions of dollars on their pets is okay, still other believe that it is completely insane to spend so much money on an animals life when we have so many people out on the streets. In this article Bilger states that,''Americans now spend $19 billion a year on veterinary care for their pets, up form $11 billion just seven years ago''. Although I can understand why someone would go to extreme measures to save a loved one like a pet, I think that $19 billion dollars is simply too much. We put our pets through so much with all the treatments and surgeries without even considering all the pain they go through. We are obviously blinded by our selfishness to want to keep our pets alive without considering how they feel.

Although I strongly believe that $19 billion dollars is far too much to spend on a pet, I also strongly believe that everyone is entitled to spend the money they earn on anything they want, like saving a pets life. Americans tend to agree that pets are like family so spending that amount a year for a family member is highly worth it. I know that I would have done anything to keep my bunny alive but when you have absolutely no money to do that you feel hopeless. The feeling of losing a pet is almost exactly the same as losing a family member so for all the pet owners who do have the money to save the ones they love,I fully support.

In conclusion, Bilger's view on how Americans spend money on their pets completely depends on weather you're a previous pet owner or someone who considers their pets like family. It may seems crazy if you haven't experienced love for a pet like that but i'm sure once you have it won't seem so crazy.

Michael & Prima [Last Meow Reflection]

1. One of the main points that the author makes is how people love their animals they will put them through various surgeries and treatments thinking that their "Quality of life" would remain the same afterwards. Another point that the author makes is that an unfortunate series of events could happen to any pet owner, rich or poor but the outcome is always different. The animal could either live or die, or be miserable or be put out of it's misery.

2.The use of pathos is very effective in the way the author describes the Levering's lifestyle. Mrs. Levering has lost her job and has been rear ended twice, Mr. Levering was recovering from Lyme disease and had just had sinus surgery. Even after going through all these dramatic misfortunes they have the will to try and pull together enough money to pay for Lady's $15,000 kidney transplant when they could just as easily put her down and put the money towards a house. Another sentence filled with pathos is when the author describes how Lady was anemic, asthmatic and congenitally blind. She was dropped at a local animal clinic at the age of six months. The last sentence we felt had a lot of pathos is when they describe a dog that has a grapefruit size growth hanging from her belly and a bleeding tumor.

3. The author has a very profound use of logos. The Levering's could use $15,000 that they don't really have to try and save a cats life or put the money towards a house. The vet tells the Levering's that she is a good candidate for the transplant but even with the transplant there are still risks such as clotting, internal bleeding, and dangerous drops in blood pressure.

4. We believe that pathos is a much stronger than logos because people love emotion more than logic. With emotion, people can relate if they have had a similar situation in their lives and even if they haven't experienced that situation the emotion still exists. When it comes down to love, people might start to think irrationally because love blinds us.

5. We agree with the author in his decision to have Lady get a Kidney transplant because when you love your pets you do what you can to keep them alive. We disagree with the author because in the end Lady ends up blind and unable to do much so her life trends have changed dramatically since the transplant.

AMC:] [2-17-11]

What we learned in todays reading that whether your rich or poor you'll do whatever you can to save a your pet. We also learned about how the topic sentence paragraph and how that sentence will tell you what to write for the rest of the paragraph. The topic sentence paragraph helped paragraphs 16 and 17 hold hands. We also learned about parallelism in the 15th paragraph. In paragraph 17 we are reminded that he is middle classed through the description of his living condition.

What we learned from the AMC site is that they have a  Pet Loss Support Group. It was started by Ms. Ari Rosner. She holds these meetings at the AMC on the fifth floor at 6 P.M.

Reaction to part 1[2-15-11]

Our reaction to part one of  ''The Last Meow'' was that it was filled with pathos. The first paragraph was filled descriptive writing all talking about how Lady looked. In the following paragraph Shawn Levering was introduced as middle class citizen. It is obvious that Levering cares for Lady because he had already payed for several surgeries but he questioned paying for her final surgery because Lady may not pull through, but in the end he goes through with it for the love of his wife.

It is hard for us to put ourselves in Levering's position because we've never had a pet that has had to go through so many surgeries, but if we were in that position we would have to look into our financial situation to come to a conclusion.

The Last Meow [2-10-11]

In today's lesson we read paragraph's two and three. We learned that to own the information in a book, you must have a pen in hand. In paragraphs two and three we learned tat they hold hands because the third paragraph starts with a pronoun that refers back to the second paragraph where they use his name.We also learned how to properly use a colon in a list. We learned that in order to remember something you must at least repeat it seven times. The last thing we learned was how descriptive writing creates images in the readers mind.

Prima:I have guppy & her name is Bubbles. One draw back to having her is that i have to constantly clean out her bowl or she could get sick. The reason I have her is because I like having something to come home to being able to call her  my own.

Michael: I have a chihuahua and her name is Maya. She is white with black spots. One drawback of having the dog is that she barks when ever strangers come over. I like having her at home though because she will always love me.

The Last Meow

Prima and I think that "The Last Meow" is about the cats in anatomy and how they dissect them for a little learning experience. Is the euthenasia worth the knowledge?

We think this will be the story because before a cat dies it takes one last meow. It may talk about how and what they used to kill the cat.

Drehle's point is that if students don't participate in some sort of summer enrichment program they will lose about a month of what they learned in school.

The author of the students essay fully disagrees with Drehle's view. He makes valid points that supports Drehle's point but also discredits Drehle's argument toward a specific group of children in only certain parts of city's.

I think that his claims are true to an extent. He is right when he says that most kids now wouldn't participate in enrichment programs due to the excessive technology & he's also right when he says that we should attend these programs for the under privileged kids to keep up with the more privileged kids.

The author has a lot of faith in his argument. He states that not all blame can be on the "summer slide," but the teachers or student need to take credit for it as well.

I personally liked this essay. This essay gave me a new perspective of the original article. I would give this essay an A just like Victors.

How does this essay compare to Victor's essay?

Prima&Michael [topic sentence paragraph]

Consider the contradictions: It was the first medicine ever designed to be taken regularly by people who were not sick. Its main inventor was a conservative Catholic who was looking for a treatment for infertility and instead found a guarantee of it. It was blamed for unleashing the sexual revolution among suddenly swinging singles, despite the fact that throughout the 1960s, women usually had to be married to get it. Its supporters hoped it would strengthen marriage by easing the strain of unwanted children; its critics still charge that the Pill gave rise to promiscuity, adultery and the breakdown of the family. In 1999 the Economist named it the most important scientific advance of the 20th century, but Gloria Steinem, one of the era's most influential feminists, calls its impact "overrated." One of the world's largest studies of the Pill — 46,000 women followed for nearly 40 years — was released this March. It found that women who take the Pill are less likely to die prematurely from any cause, including cancer and heart disease, yet many women still question whether the health risks outweigh the benefits

By Time Magazine

We believe that our topic sentence leads the way for the rest of the paragraph because every sentence that follows the first lists contradictions.
